Old Headski....

I wasn't kidding when I said that I've known Chris for almost 20 years. He used to come out to street skate with us in Macon some weekend nights. It was rare though. He was always working or schooling or in Athens skating.
This was pretty much our ledge skating in Macon. Right in front of the Courthouse....Chris FS Tails it...
.....circa '97..
..But he's missing an arm! Who cares. I used to shoot photos for fun and even went to Art Institute for 2 semesters to learn how to do it better. I borrowed Head's Hi-8's fisheye and used to shoot through that in photos. Time's were tough. I was eating Ramen and strugglin to fill the tank up when gas was below the $1 mark at QuikTrip. I had to make do with what I had. A lil 35mm stock camera....
...Halos sweatshirt. A bearing company me and Chris used to ride for. Good bearings, for real!
..Chris found, modified and installed this table at the 40 yard. I believe he was the only one who could really skate it. He ran these BS 180 nosegrinds all day....
...circa '98...
..."Wha?! What?! Another 180 nosegrind photo?!" Now you're getting it. I must have gotten paid from my working stint at Pac Sun. I see that ole $20 stand and flash in the background. Everyone hates the vinigette (?). I love it. I've always thought it looked cool. Chris's fisheye. Some weird bench thing he found and drug up to the Ponce School ledges. Man, those things are weird. You should have tried skating them when Chris first found them. Ugh. Sandpaper. But as always, I went. And we'd wax and wax and wax and wax....

David Clark!!

There's a reason why David is one of my favorite skateboarders....

New Tees!!

Zach Graham designed a shirt for us. I sent it over to Cameron at Hazard for screening. Knocked it out in a day!
Pentagram with cat faces in it. Zach calls it "Pentacats".
....I offered the name "Death Metal Pussies". His works a little better...
Cameron's got a mean front rock....
...Hit me up if you wanna order some tees! Got the Pentacats in large and Xl. As well as the Bukowski's in heather gray. L and Xl.
...Big ups to Cameron and the crew at Hazard! Dudes are killing it at life. For sure rip riding and shredding daily. Support your local park. It's the best one in town!!

Big Bro Mag 2002...

Big Brother did an Atlanta article back in 2002 that Andrew Hutchinson shot. This was 40 yard's "hey day". Before Midtown Blue cops and major developments in that part of Midtown. It attracted a lot of lookers, sightseer's and lurkers. This photo wasn't staged. It was just a random weekend warm up. Ryan Flynn was a ruler of the 40. People like the one's in the background were not common, but it wasn't unheard of to see. Mom's would drop their kids off to skate here too. Like 10 year olds. That always blew us away. So much sketchy stuff went down there and to just drop off Lil Jimmy with a Gatorade, a helmet and a skateboard was too funny.

Chris Head!!!

...I've known Chris for what seems like forever. I met him when I was 14 and he was 16, I believe. He had a piece of shit car and would sometimes come out to the woods and pick me up for skate sesh's if I annoyed him enough during the week. He's someone I've always looked up to and went to for advice with life shit, skate stuff and dumb stuff. He's really been like a big brother to me. We're peers but he's always got my back and has always looked out for me. Almost 20 years of friendship. Damn. That's crazy. Here's a couple of questions I asked him for this lil blog post. Morico shot the flicks of course.

......You were the first dude to start doing d.i.y. stuff on empty public spaces in Atlanta that most can remember. (40 yard/late 90's) What was the drive to build that stuff without the proper tools, water supplies or experience working with concrete? And what tools did you use doing it? I remember trashcans being mixers. hauling 5 gallons buckets of water from the cheetah. And smoothing the 'crete by hand....

My friend Tyler Klein was really inspired by what was going on at burnside. One night while we were skating downtown he and I found a pallet of cement. I think that he suggested building at the 40 yard. We started mounding dirt and laying cement. We threw it together in one night. It lasted for one session because it was made of masonry cement - which is the wrong stuff. This was before it became common to use google, so we did not even do any research. We just did it - and it sucked. Something about it grabbed me. From that point I started spending a lot of my time at the 40 yard. I think the only tools I had was a shovel, a plastic trashcan and a trowel. A lot of trial and error and a whole lot of grueling manual labor. I saw a bunch of crazy things down there and I learned a lot about people during that time.

.....From high school to U.G.A to Ga. State to Ga College to high school teacher back to West Ga. and now you're looking at more schooling. Where's the end of that road? Are you ever gonna get out of the school system?...

I don't know. At the end of this year I should have a BA in History, a Master's in Education and a Master's in Psychology. It seems like I am set up to get a PhD in Psychology. I may do that. Right now, my plan is just to take whatever path seems best.

.....A couple years ago, I skated with you for what you thought was your last session. You had that double ankle rebuilding surgery coming up that month. Where the Dr.'s said that you'd probably never be able to skate, run or be physically active the way you once were. What was the rehabilitation schedule of that? With all the injuries I've seen you go through and that crazy surgery, how are you skating better than you have in years?...in your 30's? Where's the fountain of youth that you've found?

Basically, I thought I would never be able to be active and then I found out I would be able to skate again. So, I had a year of not being able to skate after thinking I was done. The whole experience made me realize how important skating is to me and got me really excited about coming back. I started working out my ankles as much as I could - walking, running, biking, hiking, yoga, etc. Now I am skating and I am really appreciative.

......When I say regular frontside 180 ollie to switch frontside 5-0 grinds to fakie roll away, what do you think?

A blessing and a curse.

Ben....

...yeah, so Ben's been doing some pretty crazy shit lately at spots most people say....."Dude, what if (pro skater) was here. I'd bet he'd do this."

Morico's Bolts.....

....We're giving David Morico signature bolts!!!! Out of all the samples and colorways and box art and allen vs. phillips and length of the bolt and width of the bolt's head and marketing strategy meetings and cost analysis. These are the ones he likes best......rusty bolts by the MARTA station. He's claiming the pan head will give you higher ollies. Kinda like when you were a kid and turned your bolts upside down so your shoe would grip and make you ollie higher, only to land in immense pain skating your Chuck Taylor's.....Oh, you weren't born then?....nevermind. These will give you super ups, son!!!!

Shawn Beeks and Pusher Rob!!

It's been a few years since Ive skated with Shawn. We used to go out about 3 times a week. Pushing through downtown. Some Decatur park action. Or Crud's ramp at The Avenue. He was getting ready to move to Philly for school and came out for a "last session" with the amigos and had his knee cap explode on him for the second time. Did a tailslide on the box, landed, broke kneecap. Had to move in that condition a couple days later.
...He always swore he'd "never skating again. It's just not worth it." when I would talk with him. Then one time, I think he set up a board. A few times later he may have skated down the street. Then a little more. And a little more. I'd laugh and tell him that it's coming. Skateboarders are too dumb to just let it be as simple as that. There's always a fire and drive inside. If  you're on the street, you're gonna make it jump up the curb or grind it. That kickflip will creep back in. The forgotten mini ramp you seshed will be remembered. There's no end for this. Shawn's almost at mid 30's, got a job, 2 exploded knee caps, school stuff going on, art stuff going on and has started skating again. I'm fucking stoked!
....Rob does Pusher wheels up in Philly. Hook's up Atlanta's Aaron Brown with wheels. Builds a buncha stuff. Supports the local and makes some damn good wheels. Stoked on them. Anything that doesn't flatspot, got good width and doesn't wear out in two weeks is good by me. I've been looking for a couple years. Spits, Oj's, Bones....nah. I'll take these any day. Thanks Rob. Thanks Shawn. Good rippin and good scene from the North.
